Tim Murphy is general counsel for Mastercard. In this capacity, he oversees legal affairs, public policy, corporate governance and compliance. He is also responsible for Mastercard’s franchise, corporate security, privacy and global inclusion teams. Tim is a member of the company’s Management Committee.
Prior to assuming this role, Tim was chief product officer, where he was responsible for the development and management of payment solutions creating sustainable advantage for Mastercard and its customers.
Throughout his tenure, Tim has also served as president of the company’s U.S. region, executive vice president of customer business planning and analysis and senior vice president and associate general counsel for Mastercard.
Before joining Mastercard in 2000, he was an associate in the New York and London offices of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton.
Tim is chair of the Board of Trustees for the National Urban League and a member of the boards for the U.S.-Russia Business Council and Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. He is a member of the International Monetary Fund’s External Advisory Group on Surveillance, Council on Foreign Relations and chair of the 2019 Policyowners’ Examining Committee, Northwestern Mutual.
Tim was named a Legend in Law in 2018 by the Burton Foundation.
He received a JD degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School and a BA degree in political science from Amherst College.
